2007
Cabernet Sauvignon Testa Vineyards Mendocino County

2007 was the Testa Family's 95th Harvest. The fourth generation is starting to care for the vines under Jim Testa's supervision. This is a great tribute to a family and a great honor for a winemaker to work with such grapes and a family with such lineage. Their Cabernet vineyard was 8 years old in 2005. The vineyard is 6 acres, 1700 feet in elevation, red soil and dry farmed.

The 2007 Testa Cab is made from very small berries and exhibits silky skin tannins that carry its remarkable Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. A dense, dark wine that is both brooding and appealing. Tony feels this wine has excellent cellaring potential and can be consumed now through 2020.

This is a classic Cabernet of yesteryear, that wants to be paired with an aged steak, grilled eggplant brushed with olive oil, or a decadent chocolate dessert.

Certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers since 2005.

2002
Cabernet Sauvignon Rustling Ridge Vineyards

We produce very small amounts of Cab, in this instance only 168 cases. Cabernet Sauvignon is a very expensive wine to make, the grapes are the highest price, it needs new French Oak barrels (we used 20% on this one) and has to be aged the longest. 2002 is a very good year for Napa Cab but that doesn't mean this wine is ready to drink. This Cab is very tight and has strong acidity. This wine needs to be set up right for at least 3 days before serving. It must be decanted to separate it from the sediment and allow to breath for at least 2 hours. I would recommend serving this wine with rich cream sauces and foods. Sweetbreads, beef Wellington, Pasta Alfredo, rich cheeses and believe it or not decadent chocolate desserts. After all this, don't be afraid of this wine, I would recommend trying it and if you like it and sense the future that it has order more and put it in the deepest darkest part of your cellar.

2009
Carignane Testa Vineyards Mendocino County

The Testa family has established and owned the Testa Vineyards for 3 generations. The grapes for this cuvee are among the oldest on the ranch. Carignane is an ancient varietal grown throughout the Mediterranean. This Carignane is a dry table wine with a structure similar to Syrah but without Syrah's big fruitiness. This wine has the remarkable ability to pair with most foods, especially what is loosely called “California Cuisine” empathizing fresh ingredients grilled or braised without a lot of sauces. Enjoy with your favorite meats and vegetables.

2005
Côte des Cailloux Mathieu Vineyards

Côte des Cailloux is a joint venture between the Mathieu and Coturri families. It is a classic Rhone blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre - that has great structure with intense forward fruit. Pair it with grilled vegetables, duck breast and other cuisines of California.

2005
Chateau d' O

This wine is a spin off from our project with the Côte de Cailloux. I blended the 2005 barrels of Côte with Mathieu owner of the vineyard. We decided the Mourvedre was bringing too much earthiness to the blend so we held back two barrels of the Mourvedre. We felt we needed a wine at a lower price range to lend to the Cote. So we put together the 2 barrels of Mourvedre with a barrel of 2005 Zinfandel and a barrel of 2005 Cabernet. The name d' is a play on the French word for water and Mathieu's interest in the Book "Story of O". (I don't make this stuff up!!!)

2003
Merlot Feingold Vineyards

Merlot is a misunderstood and maligned grape. Even before the movie Sideways, Merlot couldn't get the respect it deserves, all ways in the shadow of its famous brother Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot in its purest form is a wine of great weight, acidity and a strong sense of place. Feingold Merlot has shown these characteristics from the beginning. Phil Coturri brother and co founder of Coturri Winery planted the vineyard in 1993. Since then, it has been properly grown organically and our natural wine making has coaxed the best from the grapes. The use of native yeasts brings a strong earthy note to the aroma of the wine; the clay soils allow the vine to struggle and impart a solid foundation of acidity. The hot days of summer raise the fruitiness and the cool nights lengthen the hang time and hold the complexity. Sonoma Mountain is the ideal location to grow Merlot and Feingold Vineyards is the living proof.

The 2003 and 2004 Merlot are 100% varietals from two very good years. Both seasons were relatively cool and moderate, which resulted in well-balanced and elegant wines. Both are darkly colored, earthy and fruity in the aromas, which is reminiscent of dried cherries. They have a strong backbone of acid.

The 2003 Merlot is probably the earthiest while the 2004 will be longer on fruit. These wines will match well with rich and full favored foods from Beef Wellington to sweetbreads in a cream sauce.

2007
Merlot Maclise Vineyards

The Maclise Vineyards have gone through many changes over the years. It was originally planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, but the area it's in was too cool. Gewurtztraminer was next. It grew very well there but the varietal was out of favor. Then in 1993 Merlot was planted and it has done very well. The vineyards are located in an area called Sobre Vista; a cool region perfect for Merlot.

2007 was a great vintage. The Maclise Merlot from this vintage is very deeply colored, silky, streamlined and focused. A ripe dry cherry nose, finely textured mid palate and smooth acid finish characterize this wine.

This wine will match well with grilled foods, marinated and grilled lamb, smoked eggplant or simply enjoyed with a nice triple cream brie and crusty sourdough bread.

2010
Rosé North Coast

America has finally discovered Rosé. Our 2008 harvest, while being a difficult one, turned out a very nice Rosé. Every ton that came into our wines was bled 10 gallons. It is called bleeding the must. It allows the remaining grapes and juice to be more concentrated and full-bodied.

The wine has a delightful aroma almost Champagne like, a bit yeasty. The mid palate is fruity and sweet, not sugar sweet but fruit sweet with a beautiful acidity that really defines the wine. The Rosé is a food wine that can be drunk anytime during the year. Serve it well chilled.

2006
Pinot Noir Jewell Vineyards

Barry and Kate Roach's Jewell Vineyard is located on the upper part of Sonoma Mountain. The vines are 55 years old, planted on the classic St. George Root stock and grafted with an old clone, probably from an original Burgundian source.

The vines are dry farmed, meaning no irrigation. The clusters fit in the palm of your hand and the berries are the size of peas. The wine is a study of silky tannins because the ratio of juice to skin is heavy toward the skins- a primary source of tannins. This wine is very dark, very ripe and has a wonderful texture.

Aged in re-conditioned French oak barrels for 26 months. A very age worthy, sturdy and classic Pinot Noir.

This wine pairs well with many cuisines. It has the ability to balance a traditional French cream sauce or a simple grilled assemblage of fresh vegetables and meats of your choosing.

Non-vintage
Sandocino

Our distributor in Boston is Violette Imports. Richard Karzian is the owner of the business. Violette is committed to pure and natural wines from around the world. We are one of a very few from California that he ships. He needed a wine at a price point and flavor profile that restaurants could use to sell by the glass. Glass pours at good restaurants are a very important part of marketing. It’s great to have one’s wine on the wine list. But without the server talking about the wine it will just sit there. Also, if a larger audience tastes by the glass, it allows more people to taste a winery’s production. Richard and I sat down at Coturri Winery and blended a number of wines. We found if we stayed within a single vintage we were limited on what we could make. Once we opened it up to cross vintages the results were very good. This wine is a blend of 32.5% 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, 32.5% 2006 Merlot, 32.5% Syrah and 2.5% 2004 Zinfandel. The Cab gives a good tannic base to the wine and the little bit of Zinfandel brings fruitiness. The Merlot and Syrah add structure and black fruit overtones. A good wine to drink on its own and matches well with just about any food course. An exciting concept and a good wine.

2002
Pinot Noir Lost Creek Vineyards

This wine comes from a new planting of Pinot that uses rootstocks and clones that represent the current Pinot style of California. This wine is light in color but very full bodied on the palate. It has the classic structure of Pinot, the proverbial "iron fist in the velvet glove." When this wine was young, it had an amazing amount of acidity and tannin. It has taken 4 years in the bottle to get a pinot that is accessible to drink. It has mushroom and barn aromas in the nose, a tight fruit flavor in the middle, and a long lingering finish of fruit and acidity.

This wine will match well with rich foods and sauces. My favorite is a game bird (like quail), boned and pan fried, with a sauce made from the pan drippings, the sediment from decanting, and dried fruit (like cranberries).

2006
Sangiovese Freiberg Vineyards

We have been leasing the vineyard from the Freiberg family since 1978. Myron Freiberg, the original owner, was firmly committed to organic growing practices. In many ways he was a mentor. Freiberg Vineyards will be among the first Coturri vineyards to be certified 'biodynamic'.

Sangiovese is the grape of Tuscany, the ancestral birthplace of the Coturri Family.

Sangiovese is a dark, very complex, earthy wine with overtones of ripe strawberries and new leather in the aroma, an almost sweet mid-palate and fine textured tannins in the finish.

A good match with all Italian dishes from steak Florentine to Eggplant parmesan.

2007
Syrah Crane Vineyards

Crane Vineyards is on the northern border of the Carneros Appellation. Hot days, cool nights and long hang time define this district.

Crane Syrah from the first vintage in 1999 was a winner. Since then, the quality of the wines produced from this vineyard have only gotten better. The 2005 is no exception.

Dark color, full and ripe fruit and an acidity that is almost viscous in it texture are hallmarks of this great wine. Classic Sonoma Valley Syrah at its best.

Matches well with traditional fare: grilled or braised lamb, rare duck breast over an open fire, grilled eggplant or winter vegetables.

Syrah Sonoma Solstice Vineyards

Ron Vitt and Ellen Brantley's third vintage made by Tony Coturri - a full bodied, rich wine with tons of ripe fruit flavors - this will pair nicely with gamey meats (like venison and lamb) and sharp, aged cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano.

2005
Syrah/Merlot Feingold Vineyards

What a tasty blend! The Syrah with its earthiness, firm, juicy structure gives such an excellent backbone to the cherry-nosed Merlot with its hints of cedar. This wine is a delight and will pair with foods that have some hardiness as well as some involved flavors.

2006
Zinfandel Freiberg Vineyards

The vineyard is located on the west side of Sonoma Valley, a cooler region for Zinfandel. 2006 was a difficult season. Extreme temperatures in July. Some places in Sonoma Valley reached 117 degrees, followed by a very cool Harvest time. While we eventually reached ripeness there was not the big fruit qualities associated with Sonoma Valleyand the acid levels higher than usual. But in the case of the Zinfandel form Freibergvineyards it was the perfect conditions to increase the level of Botrytis. When I recently evaluated this wine I was knocked over. The honey, melon fruit nose was astounding, a beautiful blend of aromas. The mid palate carried great Zinfandel fruit and sweetness and the acids in the finish very much balanced the wine, a very unusual Zinfandel from an unusual year. Enjoy alone or with some mild cheeses and bread. That way the unusual character of the wine can be enjoyed, but will match well with the usual Zinfandel matches.
